The following information is provided to assist you with Due Diligence. HSE require you to carry out Due Diligence when procuring non-accredited first aid training for the workplace.
Where accreditation by a nationally recognised Awarding Organisation is not a requirement, we offer qualifications that sit on our Self Regulated Framework (SRF).
Although not accredited by an independent Awarding Organisation, our self regulated qualifications are closely mapped to Ofqual's Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF), providing the knowledge, skills and understanding that underpin National Occupational Standards (NOS).
The content of our first aid courses meets the same high standards as accredited training, being fully compliant with Health & Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981 as well as recognising the latest Resuscitation Council (UK) and European Resuscitation Council Guidelines.

Each qualification regulated by How 2 Save A Life C.I.C. is assigned the following descriptors:
- Awarding Body
- Guided Learning Hours (GLH)
- Contact Learning Hours (CLH)
- CPD Points
The Awarding Body for our self regulated qualifications is How 2 Save A Life C.I.C., abbreviated to H2SAL for the purpose of qualification specifications, certificates and other documentation.
How 2 Save A Life C.I.C. is a Community Interest Company (No. 08661361) registered in England and Wales.
As an Awarding Body for self regulated qualifications our status is non-accredited.
The difficulty and complexity of the knowledge and skills associated with each H2SAL qualification is indicated by a level descriptor. Our levels are equivalent to that of Ofqual's Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF).
We currently offer Level 2 and Level 3 qualifications. Achieving a Level 2 qualification is similar to achieving a GCSE at grade A, B or C. Level 3 qualifications are similar in complexity to an A Level.
The Self-Regulated Framework is built upon learning units which require a specific amount of time to complete, referred to as Guided Learning Hours (GLH). Learners can gain two types of qualifications depending on the number of Guided Learning Hours they spend:
To achieve an Award requires a minimum of 10 GLH.
To achieve a Certificate requires a minimum of 130 GLH.
The Guided Learning Hours required to achieve our Level 2 and Level 3 qualifications classifies them as Awards.
Contact Learning Hours (CLH)
Contact Learning Hours are the minimum number of hours spent by a trainer to support learner achievement of a qualification. Contact Learning Hours are carried in a classroom setting via face-to-face contact with the trainer.
Guided Learning Hours (GLH)
Guided Learning Hours include Contact Learning Hours plus other time spent by the learner in gaining the knowledge and skills required to achieve the qualification. This may include, but not be limited to, activities such as reading course books and handouts, watching instructional videos, and practicing what has been learned during Contact Learning Hours.

Level 2 Awards
- H2SAL Level 2 Award in Activity First Aid (SRF)
- H2SAL Level 2 Award in Basic Life Support for Adults and Children (SRF)
Level 3 Awards
- H2SAL Level 3 Award in Emergency First Aid at Work (SRF)
- H2SAL Level 3 Award in First Aid at Work (SRF)
CPD stands for Continuing Professional Development. It refers to the process of tracking and documenting the skills, knowledge and experience that a person gains both formally and informally. It's a record of experience, learning and application.
Each qualification on the H2SAL Self Regulated Framework is assigned a number of CPD points to enable you track the amount of time you spend achieving your qualifications. In its simplest form, each recorded hour spent on any CPD activity will count as a single CPD point. For certification purposes, H2SAL awards learners with 1 CPD point per Contact Learning Hour (CLH).
